The giant South Korean Samsung Electronics exceeded Apple smartphones as the first vendor in the world by volume in the third quarter 2011, according to a report from U.S. research firm Strategy Analytics on Friday.
The U.S. company Apple has left his position as number one global smartphone market that had torn the previous quarter to Finland's Nokia in favor of Samsung.
While smartphone sales increased 44% year on year to 117 million units in the third quarter of 2011, Samsung sold 27.8 million smartphones, far Apple has sold its 17.1 million, and and took 23.8% market share.
"Samsung has proven it is possible, even in the short term, differentiate and grow using the Google operating system, Android," the report said.
The previous quarter, and four years after the market first iPhone, Apple had managed to exceed Nokia as the biggest seller of smartphones in the world by volume, before losing again this place against the Korean manufacturer, by simply 14.6% of the market.
According to the report, sales of Apple could have been affected by the expectation by operators and consumers, the launch of its new model the iPhone 4S in the fourth quarter.
Nokia finds himself in the third position within a hair of his rival with 14.4% of U.S. smartphone market in volume, against 32.7% over one year and 16.8 million units sold.
The Finnish mobile phone giant, however, could go in the ranking thanks to its new partnership with Microsoft that allowed him to launch this week of all new smartphones using the Windows operating system.
